In 1998, the NSW Sugar Milling Co-operative initiated a study into the development of the power stations associated with the three sugar mills at Condong, Broadwater and Harwood. This work was focused on improving environmental and workplace safety and the feasibility of renewable energy generation.
Following discussions with a wide range of industry participants, the Co-operative agreed to work exclusively with Delta Electricity, a NSW state owned electricity generator, on detailed feasibility studies for the proposal. A Memorandum of Understanding was agreed and that foreshadowed a joint venture arrangement.
At the same time, Delta was investigating options to achieve greenhouse gas reduction targets. These investigations identified biomass in general, and sugar cane material in particular, as the most cost effective renewable fuel for electricity generation. |
